J Music: BET Music Matters R&B Artist RaVaughn Brown

image

[NOTE: I wrote the below post months ago, but I decided not to post it because upon reflection I questioned whether she has the special factor that attracts me to a person, project, or voice.  I noticed particularly last week they have started the push for her record “Better Be Good” on New York and Connecticut radio — Hot 97’s Angie Martinez had nothing but positive things to say about RaVaughn.

So I pose the question to you, do she have “it”?]

Though RaVaughn is not yet a well known artist, she has collabed with some of the biggest names in the industry including J. Cole, Wale, and her boss, Ne-Yo.

RaVaughn recently performed as a BET Music Matters artist alongside rappers Boola and Nakim and vocalist Ro James.  Though her tone and sound is reminiscent of Keri Hilson’s, I think RaVaughn has the look, the right support, and edgy song & collab choices to see success.

I know when I listen to songs and I feel like whoever’s singing it is telling my story, I want to hear it over and over again and that’s what I want to give to everybody. – RaVaughn Brown

J Music: Tori Kelly at Gramercy Theater

image

Whhewww child, Tori Kelly can blow!! On Tuesday, February 5 Tori Kelly performed at Gramecry Theater for a mixed crowd of industry folks, teeny-boppers, and young adults that hung on her every note. Though the theater was packed, at times the only noise you heard was Tori and her guitar as she hit some of the most surgically produced riffs I have ever heard.  Based on the “oohs” and “aahs” of the crowd, I think everyone felt the same way.

I could go on for days, but I will spare everyone and direct you to my previous post about her virtual Christmas concert in December. For all the good things I had to say about Tori’s abilities then—she sounded even better live. Check out the videos below!

Set List:

Celestial

Stained

Thinking About Forever

Bring Me Home

Upside Down

Eyelashes

P.Y.T./Rock With You

Confetti

All rise for the Queen.

In honor of my idol taking the Super Bowl halftime stage tonight, watch one of my favorite Destiny’s Child performances below and a “Love On Top” cover by YouTube sensation Leroy Sanchez!!

Why I loved this performance:

  • Michelle is late coming down the stairs.
  • The look on Terrence Howard’s face.
  • The CLASSIC Michelle bridge.
  • The matching outfits.
Speaking of matching outfits, if you have not seen “The 25 Most Embarrassing Destiny’s Child Coordinated Looks” you must.
