J Events: Jojo Debuts New Song “I Am” at U Street Music Hall

Jojo-U-Street-Music-Hall-Meet-and-Greet

At the start of 2015, I had 6 goals. Seeing (and meeting) Jojo was one of them.

Two years ago that may have seemed impossible, but after a year of leg work under her new label Atlantic Records, Jojo has finally been able to get her career back on track. The artist formerly known as translucentbrownsugar went into full promo mode in August 2015 releasing new music, embarking on a international tour and prepping a new album for 2016.

I’ll be honest, when I first heard her three new singles (the #tringle III.), I was so distracted by the direction of her music I didn’t fully appreciate the EP for what it was. (I had hoped she’d maintain the urban/r&b influence from her early years, and I didn’t hear that in any of the singles.)

There was no greater confirmation than hearing the tracks live that musically Jojo is exactly where she needs to be. As she has evolved, so has the music and ultimately she is still serving transcendent messages that her fans can connect to — maybe more powerful than ever before.

If her near-perfect 45-minute set wasn’t enough (I sang EVERY word from the front row), it was her encore performance that was the nail in the coffin. Jojo performed “I Am,” a new record that may be the title track off her upcoming album. It blew me away and really struck a chord.

Though I wish I could teleport you all back to U Street Music Hall, we will have to settle for the footage below. Check it out, and support her album when they set the release date.

When one of your favorite artists has an appreciation of a cappella music ?. Jojo had a Ohio high school group join her for "Save My Soul," only wish the mics were working properly! If you can't get enough, check that out as well above.

J Music – Jojo Performs “Billions” at Club Red

Cause I’ve been to different atmospheres

Never did I breathe so clear

Know there’s billions in the world

But I’ll always come back to you

Jojo’s performance of “Billions” in Tempe, Arizona on her six-city tour with Leah Labelle. “Billions” was a stand-out track on her mixtape Agape. Praying for east coast dates! #FreeJojo

J Music: Jojo & Friends via Stage It

So let me preface this post by saying, I am a mess. Not only did I do a post about this live stream last week, but I also had paid for a ticket. That’s why it makes perfect sense that in the confusion of life I COMPLETELY missed the whole performance.

Anyway thanks to Andrew Kay, I was still able to watch her performance via YouTube and you can too!

Following the concert, #FreeJojo started trending on Twitter.  It is clear from her tweets of frustration that she is looking to get out of her current contract with Blackground Records. The record company continues to delay the release of her third album.

JoJo Announces New YouTube Channel & Acoustic Cover

Recently Jojo announced she now has a new YouTube page. She has already added an introduction video and an acoustic cover.

Watch her perform “Prototype/Night & Day” below. Hopefully there are more covers to come!

Jojo still plans to release her mixtape Agápē on December 18th**.

Fun Fact: “Prototype” was one of the songs performed in my final acappella spring show!

J Music: “We Get By”- Jojo

Not my favorite track from Jojo, but it is great to hear something new from her.  This is the single she released this week that will be featured on her upcoming mixtape entitled, Agápe (Greek word meaning “Spiritual Love”).

Fresh off announcing her new mixtape Agápē, JoJo debuts the first single “We Get By.” The 21-year-old singer vibes out on the funky jam, which she recorded with a group of her friends known as The Backpackkids (Austin Brown, Scott Bruzenak, and Tommy Parker), who all got together to create what they call “genre-less music.”

“We get by, we get high ’cause tomorrow’s goodbye,” sings JoJo, who remainsoptimistic in spite of the obstacles she faces. “I know it will be OK. I believe in myself.”

Agápē, described as a “labor of love from the heart without limits or boundaries,” is set for release on December 20. (Rap-Up)

J Music: JoJo Performs “Demonstrate” Live at NYFW

I wish her label would properly support this single because it should be playing on urban radio across the US!!! I say it every time I do a Jojo post, but this girl has true talent. She tweeted her frustration a few days ago (now deleted), but I hope she starts getting the exposure she deserves.

JoJo showcased her new single “Demonstrate” live for the first time during Fashion Week at the Metropolitan Pavillion in New York on Tuesday. Strutting down the runway in a short black dress and stilettos, the 21-year-old singer set the sexy mood before the Front Row fashion show at STYLE360.
